carnivorous plant

  • Sold By: Brambles Botanicals
This gorgeous Mesoamerican butterwort species is a little bit different than many of the other butterworts we have for sale.  In the mountains of northern Central America it grows as an epiphyte, so it prefers a mix with moss and/or bark. In our experience, it also prefers to be kept more wet than many other butterworts.  If grown in ideal conditions, Pinguicula mesophytica can flower all year. The flowers are vivid with a distance white stripe and round petals; the upper lobes give the flowers the appearance of having Mickey Mouse ears. A great hybridizer, mesophytica is also the pollen-parent of a couple of our favorite crosses, “Peach” and “Pastel.” The plant you will receive will be between 1"-1.5" in diameter. We would consider this an intermediate level plant.

Known from just one location in Oaxaca, Mexico, Pinguicula gigantea or the Giant Butterwort is the largest butterwort yet discovered. In ideal conditions, they can grow to be as wide as a dinner plate!  Pinguicula gigantea is also fairly unique in that it produces carnivorous mucilage on both the surface and underside of its leaves and like to be kept wetter. It also doesn’t go dormant, so it produces sticky, carnivorous leaves all year. The flowers are a beautiful purplish that starts to fade towards white as the flowers age. The plant you will receive will be between 1"-1.5" in diameter. Gigantea is also a fantastic hybridizer, producing pollen and seed if manually pollinated. In our experience, this plant is usually at its largest in the fall or winter, flowers in the winter, and then divides in the spring.

You will be purchasing a rooted cutting of Nepenthes petiolata.  These plants are from cuttings that were struck at the end of December, so they are about 4 months old.  Please, DO NOT buy these if you are expecting a large established plant and if you have little experience with young, rooted cuttings.  I will only ship cuttings that have terminal growth or a lateral bud has begun growth.  The pictures are of this particular species and are representative of the root system and stem. You will receive 1 plant that will be shipped to you bare-root by Priority Mail.   Shipping for Nepenthes is $15 for Priority Mail delivery regardless of the quantity of plants ordered from my shop.  We ship Mondays and Tuesdays.

Nick-named "Truncville" in-house, this genetically interesting cross between N. truncata and N. villosa would thrive in intermediate conditions; generally speaking of mid-range temperatures with higher humidity. Note that with N. villosa in the genetics the plant would appreciate a nighttime temperature drop. With N. truncata as the mother in this cross, we would expect to see a longer pitcher body that mostly stays a solid color but with speckling inside the pitcher. With N. villosa as the father, the toothiness of this parent may lend to some "ribbed" peristomes as a happy median with the smoother peristome of N. truncata. We would consider this an advanced level plant. *N. truncata parent picture found off a Google search, N. villosa parent picture credit to Chien Lee*

These seedlings from cross #21048 have grown to be very round, compact little plants, and shows coloration from both parents very apparently. The plant you will receive will be between 1”-1.5” in diameter. The leaves of this cross are very full and round, starting a fairly true pinguicula gigantea pale green and coloring up with a pink tinge much like pinguicula laueana in high light. We would consider this to be a beginner-intermediate level plant.

Pinguicula “Louise Belcher” is a currently unknown hybrid, named in-house for the green-to-pink color scheme and bunny-like shape of the flower; reminding us of that lovable and spicy kid from the Bob’s Burgers animated TV show. The plant you will receive will be between 1”-1.5” in diameter. The plant itself has a clumping growth habit, with oblong leaves that stay a bright green towards the center while the ends color up a blush pink. The flower is a bright purple-pink with rounded, oblong lobes giving the flower a “bunny ear” like appearance with a white throat. We would consider this to be a beginner level plant.

A Bramble’s Botanical’s-named hybrid, pinguicula “Fairy Star'' is the cross of pinguicula moranensis 'Huahuapan' x pinguicula esseriana Clone A. The plant you will receive will be between 1”-1.5” in diameter.  The pointed shape of its leaves and the way they make up a beautiful, geometric-like pattern gave it the name. The leaves stay generally a bright green hue with a slight curl to the tips that give it that star-like pattern. The flower itself is a soft lilac color that features deeper purple venation from the center, and a pale yellow throat. We would consider this to be a beginner level plant.

An in-house Brambles Botanicals hybrid, Pinguicula “Little Pink Punk” is cyclosecta x ‘Faulisi’ #2 (of 11.) It produces flowers that are almost impossibly, aggressively pink with subtle, darker veins. The leaves are a vibrant, fleshy pink with slightly pointed tips. This is a feisty new hybrid that no one has yet. The plant you will receive will be between 1"-1.5" in diameter. We would consider this an intermediate-advanced level plant.

A Brambles Botanicals-named Mexican butterwort hybrid bred by Ben Siebenaler in Portland, OR. The cross for Pinguicula “Pastel” is agnata “Red Leaf” x mesophytica #2. Even under intense light, Pastel’s mostly green leaves will barely produce any sort of coloration. The flowers have friendly, round lobes that are slightly lavender-colored and will fade to mostly white as the flower ages. This is a pastel even Morticia Addams could love! The plant you will receive will be between 1"-1.5" in diameter. We would consider this a beginner-intermediate level plant.

A new, in-house Brambles Botanicals hybrid, Pinguicula “Doily” is cyclosecta x ‘Faulisi’ #8 (of 11.) Aptly named because it produces pink, round, ruffled flowers that reminded us of the decorative coasters we would see around our grandparents’ homes; additional flower features are purple-veins and white markings close to the throat. This is an adorable cultivar that is still new to market very rare in collections. The plant you will receive will be between 1"-1.5" in diameter. We would consider this an intermediate level plant.

Pinguicula agnata “True Blue” is an incredible variety of agnata that has vibrantly colored purple blue flowers. The leaves have little-to-no anthocyanin (pigmentation) so they stay green even under intense light. Agnata “True Blue” is also a fantastic hybridizer, producing some incredible crosses including our new series “Bled.” The plant you will receive will be between 1"-1.5" in diameter. We would consider this a beginner level plant.

With N. ventricosa as the mother in this cross, we would expect to see a more waisted pitcher body shape with some speckling. With N. villosa as the father, the peristome is sure to be toothy. We would consider this an advanced level plant. *N. ventricosa parent picture found off a Google search, N. villosa parent picture credit to Chien Lee*

This hybrid has a very classic look to its leaves, coloring up on the edges more with a slight curled lip. We have not had it flower for us yet, but expect the flower to be white, possibly with a purple throat like its parent p. rotundiflora. This cross has also been somewhat and easier grower, but water level should be watched carefully that it does not go too dry or stay wet for too long. The plant you will receive will be about 1.5" in diameter. We would consider this an intermediate level plant.

A Bob Beer hybrid we have come to fall in love with, pinguicula “Pink Moon” is a cross made between pinguicula moctezumae and colimensis. “Pink Moon” is named for the incredible round pink flowers the plant produces, some of the largest we have seen in our collection to rival Pinguicula 'Faulisi'! The plant you will receive will be between 2”-3” in diameter. This amazing hybrid’s flower is not only big and pink, but the rounded lobes overlap giving it that “full moon” shape, with a contrasting white and pale yellow throat. The leaves are very long, reflecting the pinguicula moctezumae in its genetics, and stay a bright yellow-green even under high light. We would consider this to be an intermediate level plant.

This particular variety of pinguicula moranensis is found 25km outside of the town of San Cristobal de Las Casas in Oaxaca, Mexico. This plant produces almost pure white flowers, save for its yellow throat, and large neon yellow-green leaves that don’t color up much even under high light. The plant you will receive will be between 1”-1.5” in diameter. During dormancy, pinguicula moranensis var. alba will have a tight, rich green rosette with small, slightly pointed leaves. When in active growth, the plant can get quite large with bigger, flatter carnivorous leaves. We would consider this to be a beginner-intermediate level plant.

The “Yucca Do” complex is a fun one and we’re still working on collecting all of them. There are up to 7 different plants in total (1712 through 1718) that were wild-collected in Mexico in the mid-90’s by Texas-based Yucca Do Nursery and then introduced into the Atlanta Botanic Garden library. The numbers are an abbreviation of a more complicated system. “Yucca Do 1713” is almost certainly a part of the Pinguicula esseriana complex but its exact identification is still uncertain. Under intense light, 1713’s leaves can flush into a pinky bronze color while the thick leaf edges will remain light, creating a unique, contrasting display. It seems that 1713 does need seasonal temperature and/or light fluctuations to flower. The plant you will receive will be about 1" in diameter. We would consider this an intermediate level plant.

Pinguicula ‘Titan’ is an easy growing, vigorous, and aptly-named butterwort cultivar produced by Cal State Fullerton University’s greenhouse manager Leo Song. The parentage is believed to be Pinguicula agnata x macrophylla. It produces enormous, bronzy leaves and large, round flowers on long scapes. The flowers reportedly have a fragrance but we don’t think we’ve smelled them yet. ‘Titan’ will form a tight, subterranean hibernaculum while dormant. The plant you will receive will be between 1"-1.5" in dimeter. The plants we’re offering are currently dormant, medium-sized plants that should get quite large within the next growing season. While they’re dormant they’re perfect to ship and they’ll be more accepting of new growing conditions if they’re able to wake up in them. We would consider this a beginner-intermediate level plant.

A gorgeous plant. Lovely red and orange tones color the pitcher, white both heavy and delicate veins lace across the plants hood to mid tube. You can clearly see what this plant got from its parents, large hood from Catesbaei, and delicate veins from Oreophila Sand Mountain. Plant currently in a 4 inch pot. You will receive 1 division from Mother plant. The plant(s) in the picture are a representation of the plant(s) for sale. They will be of similar size and type. I currently ship Plants out on Monday’s and Thursdays, Because I don’t like for plants to sit over the weekend. So please allow a few days before shipping. Due to county regulations, it is illegal for me to ship plants potted.  I ship all plants bare root wrapped in moist paper towel. I leave the pitchers on (except during dormancy) and do my best to ship with as little damage as possible. However, I cannot guarantee that the leaves or flowers will arrive undamaged. They are delicate after all. CPR50

This unique in-house cross #22023 (moctezumae x 'Faulisi') is new to the market, and has a “starfish” like appearance due to the shape of its leaves and the pinkish coloration. The plant you will receive will be between 1”-1.5” in diameter. The flower is large is large with flatter petals and a bright pink color, reminding us of a clown's trick flower and thus giving inspiration for the name. Unlike the reverse cross, the leaves have more of a ‘Faulisi’ presentation being wider with a noticeable indent line down the center. The color is very similar to the reverse, starting out a bright yellow-green that comes from pinguicula mocetzumae, and colors up a nice pink under high light while keeping its “purple pits” indicative of ‘Faulisi’ regardless. We would consider this to be an intermediate-advanced level plant.

This cross #21049, much like the reverse set, grows very round and compact, with coloration similar to that of its parents. The plant you will receive will be between 1”-1.5” in diameter. The leaves are mostly the typical pale green of pinguicula gigantea, with a hint of the pinguicula laueana red on its margins. The plant will blush more pink under high light, though some like to stay pale green anyway. We would consider this to be a beginner-intermediate level plant.

A favorite among many collectors, pinguicula ehlersiae “Victoria” is a beautiful species with unique coloring. The plant grows with a small, compact rosette of pointed leaves that color up a bright pink under high light, while the outer margins stay a lighter tint. The plant you will receive will be between 1”-1.5” in diameter.  We would consider this to be an intermediate level plant.

An in-house Brambles Botanicals hybrid, Pinguicula “Professor Plum” is cyclosecta x ‘Faulisi’ #3 (of 11.) We named this plant for its luscious, plum-purple flowers with subtle, darker venation and darkening, almost blue hues and slight ruffles toward the ends of the petals. The spur is also purple while the flower throat is starkly white. The leaves have a subtle but solid midrib and plum-colored, upturned margins. When dormant, however, the leaves can turn almost solidly green. The plant you will receive will be between 1"-1.5" in diameter. We would consider this to be an intermediate-advanced level plant.

Another variety of the red-flowered Pingicula laueana, the “CalCarn Red” or “California Carnivores Red” has rounder, slightly ruffled flowers compared to the flatter, more rectangular petals of the typical form of laueana. We would also say the flowers may be ever so slightly less red. It is believed that Alfred Lau gave California Carnivores this variety directly. The plant you will receive will be between 1"-1.5" in diameter. We would consider this a beginner level plant.

Pinguicula agnata “Red Leaf” is an amazing variety of agnata that has increased levels of anthocyanin (pigmentation) and will, under intense light, produce blood-red leaves. “Red Leaf’s" flowers are round and mostly white, usually only featuring lavender coloration on the edges of the petals.  Agnata “Red Leaf” is also a fantastic hybridizer, producing some incredible crosses including “Rue” and “Pastel.” The plant you will receive will be between 1"-1.5" in diameter. We would consider this a beginner level plant.

You will be purchasing the perennial species Byblis gigantea (pink flower form).  This form is now extinct in the wild.  The mature plant illustrated is 1 year old and actually a hybrid, it is just meant to be a guide for what this plant will resemble once mature.  You will be purchasing a tissue culture plant in sterile media.  Please note that the cultures pictured are of this species but you will only get one "tube", not a set of 5.  Wash the media off the plant and pot it up.  It may not have roots.  I suggest 3:2:1 perlite: sand:peat.  Keep the humidity high while the plant acclimates and keep shaded until it acclimates.  You can divide these prior to potting if you wish to make additional cuttings. Shipping is $12 for Priority Mail delivery regardless of the quantity of plants ordered from my shop.

You will be purchasing a rooted cutting of Nepenthes maxima x truncata.  This is a fairly easy and vigorous plant that is good for beginners.  This hybrid gets very large so I recommend a hanging basket or terrace flower pot.  The cuttings were struck in December 2022.  As you can see from the photo (which is not this plant), the cuttings tend to be quite large - beats a seedling! Standard shipping regardless of the number of plants is $15 for USPS Priority Mail, usually  - mailed out on Monday or Tuesday.  Your plant will be send bare root.  We ship Mondays and Tuesdays.

For sale are rooted cuttings of the tropical pitcher plant Nepenthes clipeata.  This plant originated in Germany (not Wistuba) and it was debated whether or not it was the "real deal".  I had a grower from the Georgia Botanical Gardens examine the plants and he verified it is.  These cuttings were struck in December 2020 and have well-established roots.  It's a male. You will receive 1 cutting that will be shipped to you bare-root by Priority Mail.   Shipping for Nepenthes is $15 for Priority Mail delivery regardless of the quantity of plants ordered from my shop.  We ship Mondays and Tuesdays.
